I bind and wrap collected plant material to create new objects that reflect specific experiences and relationships. These objects become metaphors exploring restriction. As I identify pivotal moments and relationships with a visual language that incorporates the bound objects, they in turn become cairns or markers of the paths in my life. The paintings, drawings and sculptures represent the temporal moment between inflicted restrictions and the psychological and physical tensions that consequently occur.

The interplay between humanity and nature often appears to vacillate between the state of harmony and intimidation. As nature subjugates the human race, man in turn attempts to conquer nature. We see our lives played out before us in the lifecycles of plants and the natural world. The impulse to connect the beauty of nature to the unexplained and uncomfortable moments in our lives is the foundation of this body of work. As our daily lives balance between natural and manmade, the symmetry of the organic imagery connects to my work in an effort to reveal elements of my personal viewpoints. This work borrows references from many places, including traditional Botanical Illustration, Anthropology and Art History. The referential layers construct a space of exploration and honest intention. The resulting frame-work based in botanical reference formed into biomorphic shapes creates a visual reality that allows an image to encompass multiple aspects related to human emotional experience. These visual signifiers and the senses they evoke not only enable me to explore the elements of my personal life; they also become part of a larger universal codex as I explore and engage in an ongoing material study.
