In a nature-based body of work, Pam Rogers explores the fine line between restriction and comfort, and the impulse to connect the beauty of nature to the unexplained and uncomfortable moments in our lives.

Can the interplay between humanity and nature vacillate between a state of harmony and intimidation? As nature subjugates the human race, man in turn attempts to conquer nature. Our lives are played out before us in the lifecycles of plants and the natural world. Rogers creates a new framework based in botanical references informed by the nuance and gesture of art historical precedents. The biomorphic shapes transform into a visual reality that allows the work to encompass multiple aspects related to human emotional experience. The surreal and metaphoric effect rendered in the mixed media drawings recalls what one could call botanic magic realism.

The materials used reference the natural aspect of the work and allow for a random and uncontrolled freedom to exist in the work. Plant pigments created from leaves, seeds, blossoms and soil are used on wood panels, handmade cotton and mulberry papers.
